Jardin Serge Gainsbourg – Urban, Eco-Friendly Park
Paris’
ring road at the Porte des Lilas separated the two neighborhoods of
Lilas and Porte des Lilas. Local residents wanted an area where they could
walk, ride bicycles, play, and enjoy the peacefulness of a garden. The
solution? Build an elevated urban park above the expressway, also known as the Jardin Serge Gainsbourg.
Paris held a contest between several landscape
architects before finally choosing the local firm Territoires
in 2005. The 6-acre Paris park includes gardens, basketball courts, a
playground, a rainwater harvesting system, a bus stop, and
enough open space for almost any activity. Territoires design called for a
large open lawn area in the center surrounded by flowers, plants, and trees. Also
in the center is a small pond to facilitate rainwater collection with an
underground storage tank.
